Viola Marie Madison Metropolitan Funeral

Viola Marie Madison of Virginia Beach, Virginia, departed this life on July 4, 2023. Born to parents Leon Haynes and Maybelle Haynes of the Little Neck community of Virginia Beach, Viola spent her life dedicated to her family and her community. She and her husband, the late James Hugo Madison, Sr., raised a family in the now historical neighborhood of L & J Gardens.

Viola earned a bachelor’s degree from Bluefield State University in Bluefield, West Virginia and began a teaching career in the Norfolk, Virginia Public School System before leaving to raise her three children with her husband. Appointed by the governor of the state, she served on the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors from 1979 to 1983, and then was appointed by Governor George F. Allen to finish her late husband’s unexpired term from 1997 to 2001. She was a member of the The Links, Incorporated, an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946, and one of the nation’s oldest and largest volunteer service organizations. She was also a member of The Moles, a group of women of leadership and prominence in their communities and in their professions. 

Viola and her husband were long standing members of First Baptist Church, Bute Street where she sang in the church choir. She is survived by her daughters Patricia Marie Boone and Paula Marie Lundy (Jeff). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Derrick S. Boone, Jr., Aubrey Madison, Lindsay Harris, Spencer Lundy, Madeleine F. Deane and Jacob D. P. Boone.

She is preceded in death by her husband James Hugo Madison, Sr., and her son James Hugo Madison, Jr.
