Call the Midwife: who is Lee Armstrong's Doctor Kevin McNulty?

Call the Midwife is back on our screens and perhaps the most exciting thing about season nine is its new cast additions, particularly Lee Armstrong as Dr Kevin! The doctor made his first appearance in episode four of the new season, and returned in episode six, much to the delight of fans. But who exactly is Dr Kevin? And what might you recognise actor Lee from? We investigated…

When did Dr Kevin McNulty first appear in Call the Midwife?

Dr Kevin McNulty made his first appearance in episode four of season nine, when he was introduced as Dr Turner's assistant. Dr Kevin was one of four new doctors who arrived at Nonnatus House, and upon their arrival the new staff members caused plenty of excitement. Dr Kevin comes from a working-class background, and seems to be acutely aware of his social standing, feeling that he has to work harder than his peers.

However, the new doctor's background comes in handy when he's able to diagnose an illness that his own uncle developed when working in the mines. Kevin also helps Val deliver a child, although the difficult birth ruffles his feathers.

What happens to Dr Kevin McNulty in episode six?

The next time we meet Dr Kevin is in episode six. It is revealed that he is training under Dr Turner, and he gives viewers a little more insight into his character when introducing himself to sister Frances, who is suffering from bad period pains.

The new cast member has already cemented himself as a firm favourite, with viewers taking to Twitter after the show aired to say as much. One wrote: "Dr Kevin McNulty you are a sight for sore eyes [heart emoji]," while another tweeted: "Ummm, can Dr Kevin McNulty please join the cast because he is great and he and Val are [fire emoji]."

What else has Lee Armstrong appeared in?

Lee Armstrong's role in is only his eighth to date, making him a relative newcomer. In 2012 Lee made an appearance in detective drama Inspector , a role the actor followed up with appearances in and a small role in Christopher Nolan's award-winning 2017 war epic, .
